With stretched canvas, maximum protection on the terrace and balcony

Mainly designed to offer a barrier against the sun, stretched fabrics and parasols offer a different protection perimeter.

With its triangular design, the stretched canvas more attractive when it comes to creating a shaded area above a dining area. More extensive, its silhouette protects the guests from possible sunburn at mealtime.

To overcome these traditional blushes, a very large parasol is essential - provide at least a 4x4m model that covers an area of 16m square.

On the UV side, manufacturers have the obligation to indicate the type of fabric used, whatever the model, and therefore its protection index. An index preceded by the letter T designates the word "thermal", one then finds a scale going from T10 to T100 (T20 corresponds to a protection located between 10 and 20%). For stretched fabrics, it is preferable to choose a model certified "NF fabrics", which guarantees a better quality of the product (longevity and resistance).

With the parasol, more flexibility

If some prefer a fixed shade area, others want more flexibility so that they can be protected in different places in the garden - and whatever the time of day!

The stretched canvas being maintained, depending on the model, by stakes or hooking points, it will be more difficult for you to move it. The parasol is more practical for this, especially the models with roller feet!

There are commonly 3 types of umbrellas. The choice then depends above all on daily use.

  • The right parasol : this is the classic model. There are all shapes (round, square, etc ...). They may or may not have a tilting mast, and can be more than 4m in diameter. This type of parasol generally slips into the central hole of a table or is installed by the pool. It is held at the base by a foot, often sold separately.
  • The umbrella says "deported": it allows you to modify the position of the canvas as needed. But beware, his foot is very heavy and movement is limited. Its articulated arm allows it to take different positions. If you opt for a large parasol, choose a model with a crank. This will allow you to open it more easily.
  • The balcony parasol: it has a fixing system intended exclusively for use on a balcony. Some models are equipped with a mast which is fixed by pressure from the floor to the ceiling. Others must be attached to the railing or table with a clamp system.

Parasol or stretched canvas: draw against bad weather

Although the summer season rhymes with sunshine, we are not always immune to a few refreshing showers. For big barbecue lovers, rain is not a problem as long as they are sheltered!

In this particular context, umbrellas and stretched fabrics offer the same disadvantages despite their somewhat different design. The parasol effectively preserves the perimeter it is supposed to protect thanks to its slightly convex shape. However, there is a risk of rain pouring out even more all around the parasol. The shelter is also more limited than that offered by the stretched canvas. The latter will nevertheless have less effectiveness in protecting guests since its flat shape does not stop the drops in the event of a shower. A draw for this test against the weather.

However, be aware that depending on the model, the stretched canvas and the parasol now offer more resistance over time despite the vagaries of the weather. We will then prefer a square shaped parasol acrylic, and a stretched canvas known as transfused - so that the rain does not come in the middle of the meal.
